New Flyer building 50 more buses for San Francisco transit agency

WINNIPEG—New Flyer Industries Inc. will produce another 50 diesel-electric buses for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) under an umbrella contract signed late last year.

Production of 50 40-foot Xcelsior diesel-electric hybrid buses is already underway, according to New Flyer, and are expected to be delivered by the end of 2013.

Those are in addition to the orders for 62 of the same buses placed by SFMTA in 2012 as part of an umbrella deal signed with an undisclosed state government in April 2012.

The umbrella contract is a “standing offer” open to any public transit agency in the United States for the purchase of as many as 500 buses.
