Bombardier wins $93M order to build 28 new vehicles for Vancouver’s SkyTrain
New Mark III cars to boost passenger capacity along city's Expo and Millennium Lines by 12 per cent
VANCOUVER—Bombardier Inc. has won an add-on contract with Metro Vancounver transit operator TransLink to build 28 new automated rail vehicles for the West Coast city’s SkyTrain.
Awarded to the Quebec-based plane and train maker’s Transportation division, the $93 million contract option builds on a 2012 deal for Innovia Metro 300 vehicles, known locally as Mark III SkyTrain cars.
The order will increase the transit system’s capacity along the Expo and Millennium Lines by about 3,600 passengers, or 12 per cent.
Bombardier has built rail vehicles for Vancouver’s transit network for more than 30 years. The latest order is partially funded by the provincial and federal governments.
Production is expected to start in late 2017 and all cars are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2018.
