Strategic partnership to work toward development of robot capable of inspecting offshore oil and gas assets

ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—Kraken Sonar Inc. has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Boston, Massachusetts-based Square Robot.

Under the new research and development deal, the two companies will work together to design and build advanced sensors and robotic systems for use in the offshore oil and gas industry. Targeting underwater confined-space inspection applications in particular, Kraken and Square Robot plan co-develop technology capable of remotely inspecting offshore assets using advanced acoustics, as well as optical and laser sensors.

“Both companies believe that small, agile robotic inspection systems will bring about considerable improvements for assessing the condition of key oil and gas assets,” Karl Kenny, Kraken’s president and CEO, said. “Integrating advanced sensors onboard these robots increases the precision of measurement and the quality of the resulting data.”

Kraken, which is based in St. John’s, N.L. and develops a range of sensors for underwater vehicles, expects to be awarded an initial contract to build sensors for the Boston robotics firm within 60 days.
