Feds make 90 building code changes to boost energy efficiency

Under regulations, new builds to be 27 per cent more efficient than in 1997
OTTAWA—The National Research Council has introduced approximately 90 changes to its building code framework.
Updating standards for lighting, water, as well as HVAC and ventilation systems, the new regulations aim to make newly-constructed Canadian buildings more energy efficient as both provincial and federal governments focus on reining in emissions.
“As Canada’s go-to research and technology organization, the National Research Council is providing Canadians with solutions based on sound scientific knowledge and industrial innovation,” Richard Tremblay, general manager of construction at the public sector R&D centre, said. “The construction industry is asking for more energy efficient design and building solutions, and this new code will help them get there. ”
The NRC said the updates will harmonize the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2015 with Canada’s energy efficiency regulations and industry standards. New buildings designed under the code will be 27 per cent more energy efficient than those built in 1997.
