The latest edition of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) has been enforced in Ontario since early May 2016. Anyone responsible for electrical installation projects in the province must adhere to the rules and regulations set out in the OESC. It also means candidates for the Master Electrician Exam—administered by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)—must have be familiar with the new Code.
The OESC is published by the ESA—an administrative authority acting on behalf of the Government of Ontario with specific responsibilities under the Electricity Act and the Safety and Consumer Statutes Administration Act. With public safety as a top priority, the OESC is regularly updated to keep pace with new technology and safety considerations.
Revisions and updates are made every three years through the efforts of a number of volunteer technical committees and subcommittees representing key electrical industry stakeholders and jurisdictions across Canada. This broad consultative process uses insights from technical reviews, incident data, and feedback from these stakeholders. Key changes in the new edition align with the changes and revisions to the 23rd edition of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, as well as specific requirements for the province of Ontario as compiled by ESA.
All licensed electrical contractors performing work in the province of Ontario must understand and follow the requirements in the 2015 edition to ensure safe electrical installations and decrease the number of costly re-works of electrical installation projects. The new edition of the OESC is available for purchase from CSA Group.
For more information on the OESC or to purchase your copy visit www.csagroup.org/oesc. It’s critical for those preparing to write the Master Electrician Exam to be well-versed in the OESC. These candidates must also meet specific criteria as outline by ESA, all culminating with successful completion of the Master Electrician Exam.
