Suncor taps KBR for Edmonton refinery turnaround

A turnaround is a massive preventative and predictive maintenance endeavour akin to an 18,000-point inspection on a vehicle.

Calgary—Suncor Energy has hired Houston-based engineering firm KBR to handle turnaround services for Suncor’s refinery in Edmonton, Alta.

KBR will assist with turnaround planning review, maintenance, pipe fabrication and long-term execution plans. Financial terms were not released.

A turnaround is a massive preventative and predictive maintenance endeavour akin to an 18,000-point inspection on a vehicle.

Suncor’s  turnaround on its upgrader in Fort McMurray, Alta., in August 2011 lasted six weeks, required 4,000 workers putting in 1.2 million man-hours.

It included work on:
• 80 vessels
• 101 exchangers
• 300 control valves
• 141 pressure safety valves
• 316 block valves
• 260 instruments
