Quality Cheese to open new facility with help of FedDev Ontario, province
ORANGEVILLE, Ont.—Specialty cheese maker Quality Cheese Inc., is moving into a new 64,000 square-foot plant in Orangeville, Ont., northwest of Toronto.
The food manufacturer, which produces Italian and French cheeses under the BellaCasara and Albert’s Lea brands, is investing $11.6 million of private funds—as well as $2 million from FedDev Ontario and $1.2 million from the provincial government—in the new facility.
“This funding from FedDev Ontario will enable Quality Cheese to increase our production capacity, expand efficiencies for growth and compete for import and export opportunities,” Albert Borgo, vice-president of Quality Cheese, said. “These actions are vital to achieving our company’s short-term and longer-term goals as we continue to grow in our production of specialty cheeses, including brie, camembert and blue cheese products.”
The federal development fund’s investment will go toward outfitting the new facility with state-of-the-art equipment, and aims to make locally-made specialty cheese available to more Ontarians.
Based in Woodbridge, Ont. Quality Cheese’s was incorporated in 1988, but its history stretches back to the ’50s.
The new facility is expected to open by 2017 and create 20 full-time jobs in Orangeville.
