TORONTO—Among the entries from youth around the world, a young Canadian girl was selected as one of 30 finalists and as a “bronze” winner in her age group of the 2013 Toyota Dream Car Art Contest.

The drawing, entitled GOTOYO, was selected in April as one of the nine Canadian winners to represent Canada in Toyota’s international artwork competition in the 10-12-year-old category.

In all, about 610,000 entries were received from children in more than 70 countries.

Selected as a global finalist, Yoon (who is too young to be identified) and her parents—who live in St. Catharines, Ontario—were invited by Toyota on an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan this week to attend a special awards ceremony.

Today, she was also awarded the bronze prize among the finalists in her age category.

“We are proud and excited that a young Canadian was selected as a finalist in this first year that we were able to participate in the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest,” said Seiji Ichii, President and Chief Executive Officer, Toyota Canada Inc. “We hope that more Canadians can see what a little bit of creativity and a lot of imagination can do for the future of innovation.”

“We couldn’t believe it when we were told Yoon was chosen as one of the nine winners in Canada,” said Chan, Yoon’s father. “But to be selected as one of the top 30 finalists in the world was something we never imagined. Yoon definitely created a dream car.”

The goal of the contest is to inspire creativity among youth and reinforce the importance of having a dream, while encouraging an interest in cars.

A judging panel analyzed the submissions based on overall concept, originality, design and use of colour. Digitally-created pieces were not accepted.
