Dairy giant eyes specialty cheese expansion with acquisition of goat cheese maker

MONTREAL—Saputo Inc. has announced it will acquire Woolwich Dairy, an Orangeville, Ont.-based company with manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Quebec and Wisconsin. Canada’s dairy giant said it paid $80 million in cash to close the deal.

Woolwich generates revenues of approximately $70 million a year, producing, distributing, marketing and selling goat cheese in across North America. The company operates three manufacturing facilities as well as an Ontario distribution centre and employs 190 people. Saputo noted its brands include Woolwich Dairy, Chevrai and Wholesome Goat.

Montreal-based Saputo said the transaction enables it to increase its presence in the specialty cheese category in North America.
