Newfoundland company charged in death of bicyclist struck by overhanging truss

CLARENVILLE, N.L.—A company in Newfoundland is facing health and safety charges after a bicyclist was killed by a truss on a truck.
Service NL said today that Eastern Roof and Floor Truss Manufacturing Inc. and a company supervisor have been charged with violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The charges come following an investigation into the bicyclist’s death in September 2011 on the Bonavista Highway.
Service NL says the cyclist was struck by an overhanging truss, which had been loaded onto the trailer of a delivery truck.
The company has been charged with failing to protect people not in its employ, while a supervisor was charged with permitting a worker to operate equipment which could create a hazard.
Both are due in provincial court on Sept. 19 in Clarenville.
