Deal will see companies jointly develop and market metro trains and trams in former Soviet nation
Berlin—Bombardier’s Transportation division has signed co-operation agreements with Russian rail manufacturer UVZ to jointly develop and sell state-of-the-art metros and trams, the Canadian firm announced.
The two companies will jointly develop and market metro trains specifically designed for the challenging requirements of Moscow Metro and other cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to Bombardier.
Bombardier also provides UVZ with a licence to manufacture and sell low-floor trams with Bombardier technology in Russia.
The licensed product is a variant of the Bombardier Flexity platform of vehicles operating worldwide, designed for operation mainly on existing networks.
Bombardier’s relationship with Russia and the CIS dates back half a century through Deutsche Waggonbau AG (DWA), acquired by Bombardier in the late 1990s.
From 1948 to 1995, DWA manufactured one out of every two passenger rail coaches made for the Soviet Union and later Russia.
