Bombardier nets US$89M order for 16 LRVs in the Netherlands

Transportation giant to deliver 16 FLEXITY Swift vehicles to Rotterdam Transport Authority in 2016
BERLIN—Bombardier Transportation has received a US$89-million order from the second largest city in the Netherlands for more than a dozen light rail vehicles (LRVs).
The deal with the Rotterdam Transport Authority (RET) will see the rail giant deliver 16 of its FLEXITY Swift LRVs in 2016 after delivering 64 vehicles to the city between 2008 and 2012.
Bombardier also delivered 81 vehicles to the city between 1998 and 2002.
The vehicles will run on the new Hoekse Lijn, a 30-kilometre rail line running through Rotterdam’s west end to Hoek van Holland, Amsterdam, on the country’s coast.
“The arrival of the new high-quality light rail connection Hoekse Lijn … is an achievement to be proud of,” RET chief executive Pedro Peters said in a statement.
“It goes without saying that a new high-quality transport connection needs high-quality vehicles. Our long term relationship with Bombardier, delivering many light rail vehicles to RET over the years, has always been highly satisfactory.”
Each FLEXITY Swift vehicle is 42 metres long and is made up of three modules, with a capacity of 270 passengers—104 seated and 166 standing.
The vehicles run on Bombardier’s MITRAC propulsion system.
During peak hours, two of the LRVs can be couple together to increase capacity, according to Bombardier.
Bombardier builds its FLEXITY Swift LRVs for RET at its plant in Bautzen, Germany, with the electrical equipment provided by its Mannheim, Germany, site and the bogies from its Siegen plant, also in Germany.
To date more than 1,000 FLEXITY Swift LRVs have been sold worldwide, according to Bombardier.
