Mortimer’s Fine Foods plans to automate packaging line, add 14 new jobs

ST. CATHARINES, Ont.—Canafric Inc., which is better-known by its brand name, Mortimer’s Fine Foods, is launching a multimillion-dollar expansion project at its Southwestern Ontario food processing plant.

The frozen food company plans to invest $6.8 million to upgrade and automate its packaging technology, a project that will add 14 new jobs at the St. Catharines, Ont. site.

“Our new, state-of-the art facility will help us meet the increased demand for our existing product lines, while helping us to develop new products for distribution in Canada as well as for export to the U.S. market and beyond,” Alim Somji, the company’s director, said. “We expect that future growth and innovations will flow from this important investment.”

The Ontario government is contributing 10 per cent of the project costs to help the meat pie and quiche maker increase productivity and exports.
