Will supply communications electronics to be integrated into European Data Relay Satellite system

RICHMOND, B.C.—MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) has signed a $4-million deal to supply satellite communications technology for a European satellite system.

According to MDA, it won the contract to supply German aerospace firm OHB System AG with communications electronics that will be integrated into the European Data Relay Satellite (EDRS) system.

The MDA technology will be used in the EDRS-C telecommunications satellite.

MDA said the EDRS system will relay information between Low Earth Orbit satellites and ground stations.

EDRS will increase the time the satellites can be in communication with the ground and enable faster delivery of imagery to users.

This will support response activities following natural disasters, such as providing accurate space-based maps of affected areas.

EADS subsidiary Astrium is the industrial prime contractor to the European Space Agency for the implementation operation of the EDRS system.
