October campaign will focus on personal protective gear
TORONTO: Ontario safety inspectors will be blitzing workplaces for the remainder of October to ensure workers are properly equipped with safety gear.
The province’s Ministry of Labour said inspectors will be looking at industrial and health care sectors and focusing on hazards involving the choice, use and maintenance of personal protective equipment, including clothing, helmets, shoes, goggles, respirators, plus fall, respiratory, skin and hearing protection.
In 2010, the ministry says 1,075 workers sustained impact injuries that, in some cases, caused temporary or permanent vision loss, 1,515 suffered head injuries and 1,120 received foot injuries caused by crushing, puncturing or dousing with hazardous substances.
“In many cases, the injured workers were wearing improper eye, head or foot protection or no protection at all,” it said in a release.
This latest campaign is part of the province’s Safe at Work Ontario program. Since 2008, inspectors have conducted 266,000 field visits during 34 blitzes and have handed more than 426,000 compliance orders.
