Dates for N.L. offshore bids changed as environmental study complete

Any project proposed for Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore areas will still be subject to full environmental assessment
ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil and gas regulator is setting a new date for bids on properties located hundreds of kilometres off the province’s east coast.
The board said in a news release the new deadline of Dec. 12 is being set now that it has concluded an assessment of environmentally sensitive areas off eastern Newfoundland.
The call for bids includes the Flemish Pass sub-basin, located about 500 kilometres east of St. John’s; the Jeanne d’Arc region, located about 340 kilometres southeast of St. John’s; and the Carson Basin, located south of the Jeanne d’Arc area.
The 460-page strategic environmental assessment for the areas off eastern Newfoundland is a wide-ranging examination of potential “sensitive or special” areas such as deep sea corals or potential marine parks.
The regulator says any project proposed for Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore areas will still be subject to a full environmental assessment.
