Military hands $254M truck contract to US firm
Ottawa faces a public relations nightmare awarding a $254-million contract to build 1,300 trucks for the Canadian Forces to Navistar. The US company is laying off 690 workers at its Chatham, Ont. Plant while planning to build the Military Commercial off the Shelf (MILCOTS) vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Texas. > Full Story |

US employment still dropping: Conference Board
The report says another two million US jobs are in jeopardy in 2009. The Conference Board Employment Trends Index (ETI) fell another 1.6 per cent in December—it now stands at 99.6, decreasing from the November revised figure of 101.2, and down almost 16 per cent year-over-year. > Full Story |

Trade surplus shrinks
Canada's trade surplus with the world fell to $1.3 billion in November from a revised $2.3 billion in October. Statistics Canada reports both exports and imports declined in November. The agency says more than two-thirds of the drop in exports and almost all the decrease in imports were due to energy products, as crude petroleum prices continued to fall. > Full Story |
