HPC Tooling
Iscar: JETHP LINE HPC Cutting Tools
Iscar’s JETHP LINE of special HPC tools includes CUT-GRIP grooving tools, ISOTURN and HELITURN turning and facing tools, TANG-GRIP parting and grooving tools, and PENTACUT grooving, recessing and parting tools.
Turning jobs these high pressure coolants have handled include outer and inner diameter work on titanium and Inconel turbomachinery discs, titanium airframe parts, miniaturized parts and a variety of stainless steel components.
Coolant pressures for these applications have ranged up to 400 bars, but most have been in the 70-100 bar range.

Sandvik Coromant: CoroTurn HP High Pressure Coolant System
Improved chip control and extended tool life are two key benefits of Sandvik Coromant’s CoroTurn HP high pressure coolant system, which is a unique combination of Coromant Capto and CoroTurn HP (high pressure) design that harnesses the machining possibilities afforded by high pressure coolants, which lead to increased productivity or as much as 50 per cent increased tool life in some materials.
The Coromant Capto coupling channels the coolant through the turret or spindle and accurately positions it on the spot that most needs it (not possible using shank tool holders).
This system can be used in any machine equipped with high pressure coolant and Capto coupling, including multi-task machines, vertical turning lathes (VTL) and turning centres.
CoroTurn HP penetrates the heat affected zone via a high pressure coolant jet delivered through small nozzles to cool the insert faster, more effectively and allow optimal chip control. The jet creates a hydraulic wedge between the top surface of the insert and the underside of the chip being removed from the component or material, helping to reduce insert wear and break the chip into smaller pieces for quicker evacuation from the cutting edge.
The nozzles, mounted closer to the insert cutting edge, help increase the velocity of the coolant jet at lower pressures and keep the insert freely accessible for easy indexing.

Seco Tools: Jetstream Tooling
Seco Tools’ answer to machining difficult alloys is Jetstream Tooling, a high pressure coolant tool that works by delivering a concentrated high pressure jet of coolant at high velocity straight to the cutting edge.
According to Don Graham, manager of turning products and education services for Seco Tools, what distinguishes the Jetstream from other comparable systems is that “the distance between the outlet (nozzle) and the chip/tool interface is much less on our system. That means that the stream of coolant arrives at that chip/tool interface before significant dispersal of the coolant occurs. As soon as the coolant leaves the nozzle it begins to disperse, loosing density and therefore heat capacity and force. Due to the proximity of the nozzle and chip/tool interface on our system, the coolant is still relatively dense when it arrives, and forms an effective hydraulic wedge underneath the chip.”
